If you are running FileMaker Server, you should be thinking about backups as part of your overall Disaster Recovery (DR) strategy. Based on our years of experience implementing FileMaker in the Cloud, our AWS and FileMaker teams collaborated to build OptiFlex to meet the unique needs of FileMaker applications.
OptiFlex maintains a complete copy of your server, ready to go at a moment’s notice. Its off-site backup provides not only a copy of database files but a fully functional FileMaker Server ready to go at a moment’s notice, at a fraction of the cost of maintaining a server running 24/7. Should disaster strike, one of several available restore points can be launched from our client portal to start up a FileMaker Server running your files from that restore point.
How it Works
When implementing OptiFlex, we work with each client to define requirements based on several factors:
- Total size of the solution
- External container data
- Additional database folder
- Time to back up and copy from on-prem
- Scheduled Scripts
- Saved EAR passwords
- Custom SSL, as an option
We then work with clients to schedule a script that runs on your on-prem FileMaker Server that takes care of all the moving pieces, including making a backup of files, copying them securely to durable cloud-hosted object storage, verifying files on the DR server and creating a cost-effective snapshot that provides a recovery point. We establish if any scheduled scripts are needed, as well as encryption-at-rest enabled files that may require passwords to open.
Backup Packages
Each discrete backup comprises a “package” that gets handled in the order they are received, securely synced from an S3 bucket, and processed for errors. Should you have a large amount of externally stored container data, we can sync those changes so you only copy up files that have changed since the last sync, greatly reducing the amount of data that needs to be copied.
After files are copied completely, each “package” is then verified by FileMaker Server, ensuring all files are ok and able to open. If, for example, a file has been changed with a new EAR password, we will be notified at the time they are verified.
Each snapshot appears in our client portal as a recovery point and can be launched from there, entirely self-service by you, the client. In just minutes, a restore point can be up and ready with files hosted and available for users to connect.
